SANParks EPWP Environmental Monitors Programme 2025

The South African National Parks (SANParks), in collaboration with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), is offering an opportunity for unemployed South African youth through the Environmental Monitors Programme 2025. Programme Overview

SANParks has made 9 Environmental Monitor positions available within Golden Gate Highlands National Park. These positions are offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 March 2026. Successful participants will earn a daily wage of between R208 and R311, in line with EPWP rates.

This programme is designed for individuals who are passionate about conservation, education, and community upliftment, and who want to play a meaningful role in environmental protection.

Requirements

To qualify for this programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification (Standard 10).
  • A Certificate or Diploma in Natural Environment or related field will be advantageous.
  • A valid Code B (08) driver’s license will be an added advantage.
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Good physical health and ability to perform field duties.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and after-hours.
  • Proficiency in English; knowledge of other official languages is beneficial.
  • No criminal record – a valid SAPS Clearance Certificate must be submitted.
  • Basic understanding of Health and Safety principles.
  • Own transport and accommodation (no staff housing provided).
  • Willingness to undergo a fitness assessment.
  • Preference will be given to local candidates – proof of residence is required.

Responsibilities

Environmental Monitors will take part in a wide range of duties, including:

  • Conducting ecological monitoring and environmental education activities.
  • Assisting with the coordination of departmental tasks and functions.
  • Planning and presenting environmental programmes.
  • Supporting environmental education programmes and awareness events.
  • Performing cleaning and maintenance duties at Wilgehof Environmental Education Centre.
  • Assisting with facility preparation and upkeep of dining, kitchen, ablution, and outdoor areas.
  • Ensuring compliance with SANParks health, hygiene, and safety standards.
  • Assisting with stock control of cleaning and consumable supplies.
  • Handling administration tasks such as timesheets, logbooks, and reports.
  • Supporting natural resource management activities.
  • Performing ad hoc duties as required.
