SANParks Expanded Public Works Programme (X5 Posts)

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is inviting applications for five skilled environmental monitor positions under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). These fixed-term roles offer a chance to contribute directly to conservation efforts, outdoor law enforcement, and ecological protection—operating until 31 March 2026.


Location & Compensation

  • Where: Golden Gate Highlands National Park
  • Remuneration: R 311.00 per day, in line with EPWP wage rates

These positions involve rigorous work in remote and challenging terrain. Applicants must be ready to work beyond standard hours (weekends, after hours) and prepared for physically demanding field duties.


Who Is Eligible: Core Requirements

To be considered, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Possession of Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification (Standard 10)
  • Good physical fitness; ability to conduct extended patrols in mountainous, rugged terrain
  • Willingness to undergo medical fitness examination
  • No criminal record; valid police clearance required
  • Ability to be flexible with work hours, including weekends and after hours

Additional preferences that would strengthen an application:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Competency with firearms (self-loading rifles, manually operated rifles, 9mm pistols)
  • Own reliable transport and accommodation (note: SANParks does not provide staff housing)
  • Willingness to undergo a fitness assessment

Responsibilities & Key Duties

The selected environmental monitors will be required to perform a variety of duties, broadly including:

  • Law enforcement and patrols: monitoring wildlife, anti-poaching efforts, problem animal control (on foot, by vehicle or horseback)
  • Conservation infrastructure maintenance: maintaining fences, trails; managing soil erosion; repairing roads; rehabilitating areas damaged by environmental stressors
  • Fire management: suppression of wildfires; setting up firebreaks; conducting prescribed burns
  • Alien species eradication: assisting with clearing invasive plant species
  • Record keeping and reporting: maintaining accurate incident logs, sightings, vehicle logbooks; reporting to section rangers or corporals
  • Additional support tasks: helping at the stable for horse-riding activities; general conservation assistance as required
