Supervise flying duties and responsibilities, allocate duties and tasks, liaise with the Operations Manager, Training Captain and Chief Engineer. Oversee and manage the execution of all aviation flight crews duties across the ports of South Africa. Flight planning, preparation of aircraft to conduct flights for the marine pilot service and Port related functions in accordance with TNPA requirements, standard operating procedures, policies, Civil Aviation regulations and National Ports Act No.12 of 2005. Lead a team of aviation flight crew across all ports of South Africa and to ensure that the highest standards of aviation operations and safety are adhered to at all times as per SACAA Part 127. The Chief Pilot is also the Commander of the aircraft for both Day and Night Operations and is also responsible for the safety and management of the crew and passengers on board the aircraft as per SACAA CARs 91.02.7, 91.02.8 Regulations as well as TNPA SOP’s. Assist in managing and co-ordination of all training for Marine Pilot Services and ensure compliance with the SACAA regulations, the Transnet SOC LTD Operations manual as well as the Rotorcraft Flight Manual at all times when undertaking his/her duties as Helicopter Night & Day Captain and/or Helicopter Line Instructor at all times and is responsible for the safety of the crew and passengers on board the aircraft as per SACAA CARs 91.02.7 and 91.02.8.

Position outputs:

  • Oversee and manage the execution of all aviation flight crews across the ports of South Africa to meet and exceed customer and stakeholder expectations.
  • Supervises and is responsible for crew scheduling and exercise control over discipline and deportment of flight crew members across the ports of South Africa.
  • Responsible for ensuring the optimum utilisation of flight crew across the ports of South Africa to meet the operational requirements of TNPA and SACAA regulations.
  • Liaises with Flight Operations Manager and the Training Captain to ensure that all flight crew comply with the respective requirements.
  • Ensures that proficiency checks, license renewal and Instrument checks are carried out.
  • Responsible for advising Flight Operations of procedures that contribute to a safer and more economical and efficient operation of aircraft.
  • Assists and partners with Flight Operations for the maintenance of operating standards.
  • Good communication skills. Contribution to continuous improvement of processes and task execution.
  • Assertiveness and ability to take charge in executing flight safety procedures.
  • Will be required to perform any other duties assigned to him/her by the Flight Operations Manager.
  • Plan daytime and night-time flight missions in accordance marine traffic
  • Demands and Port Control directives.
  • Prepare aircraft resources and loading schedule for marine pilot transfer and
  • Port related functions.
  • Responsible for preflight checks and safety briefings to ensure compliance with stringent safety requirements.
  • Ensure transfer of marine pilots safely to vessels as they call and depart from the shores of the South African Port system.
  • Ensure compliance with South African Civil Aviation Regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with SAMSA and the National Ports Act No. 12 of 2005. Evacuation of accident victims and persons in distress.
  • Conduct port related flights in accordance with TNPA and customer requirements.
  • Determination of flight routes (flight planning) in accordance with approved aeronautical requirements and charts.
  • Liaison with Port Control and Air Traffic Navigation Services.
  • Recording of take-off and landing times to fulfil scheduling requirements
  • Ensure customer satisfaction and performance.
  • Logging of operational flight times and determination of mission efficiencies.
  • Assisting in delivering a 24hour seamless operation to enhance port productivity in line with TNPA business objectives and customer demands.
  • Contribution to business reputational enhancement by minimising incident and accident occurrences within the Port system, by adherence to the strictest safety requirements.
  • Ensure prompt responses to Port control directives to enhance ship turn-around times.
  • Training and development of Day Captains, Co-Pilots, Cadet Pilots and related functional personnel.
  • Receive daily operational reports from the Day Captain.
  • Conduct Line Proficiency Checks on Night and Day Captains, Co-Pilots and Cadet Pilots.
  • Assess Instrument flying capabilities on all pilots on the operation.
  • Flight planning, preparation of aircraft to conduct day and night flights for the marine pilot service and Port related functions in accordance with TNPA requirements, standard operating procedures and policies.
  • Undertake experiential training to meet the standards set by national and International Aviation Regulatory authorities (skills development of Cadet Pilots and Co-Pilots).
  • Application of the Civil Aviation regulations as well as the National Ports Act No. 12 of 2005.
  • Ensure uninterrupted operation of TNPA helicopter service to deliver high Quality service and enhance safety and port efficiency across all ports of South Africa.
  • Responsible for the safety and management of the crew and passengers on board the aircraft as per SACAA CARs 91.02.7, 91.02.8. Regulations as well as TNPA SOP’s.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Hold a current ATPL/H
  • Minimum of 2200 hours total flight time
  • 2000 hours on helicopters
  • 1500 hours Pilot-in-command time
  • 1000 hours on turbine helicopters
  • 500 hours on multi-engine helicopters
  • 250 hours on A109
  • Instrument Rating
  • Winching Rating
  • Sling Load Helicopter Rating
  • Helicopter Instructor Rating would be advantageous
  • Maintenance / Test Pilot Rating Class 1 or 2
  • Night Captain experience will be advantageous
  • Minimum 8 – 10 years’ experience in Aviation
  • Operational knowledge of the functions of TNPA marine pilot services will be advantageous.
