The Western Cape Provincial Parliament invites graduates to apply for a legal internship programme for 2023

  • The Western Cape Provincial Parliament invites graduates to apply for a legal internship programme for 2023.
  • The internship programme will run for 12 months.
  • The internship programme is aimed at providing graduates with an opportunity to develop as young professionals in the legal field, notably in the area of provision of legal advice to the legislature’s various stakeholders (the administration, parliamentary committees, and the Speaker).
  • The internship programme will involve coaching, mentoring and on-the-job training.
  • The successful candidate will at all times operate under the direct supervision of the legislature’s own in-house legal team.

The minimum requirements for the successful applicant are that you must:–

i. have a LLB (Bachelor of Laws) or LLM (Master of Laws);
ii. be a South African citizen;
iii. be between the ages of 18 and 35;
iv. be unemployed, and have no prior work experience; and
v. not previously have participated in an internship programme.

  • Preference will be given to African and Coloured applicants, especially female applicants, but other applicants will not be excluded from consideration. –
  • Your application must be accompanied by a short essay on your views regarding the difference between the law and justice (if any). This essay must not be longer than 1000 words.
  • Your application must be accompanied by any piece work that you consider representative of your ability to think critically and of your research and analytical skills.

As far as general skills and attributes are concerned, the successful candidate will:–

i. have good communication and interpersonal skills;
ii. have the ability to work well in a team;
iii. be able to deal well with conflict and pressure;
iv. have well-developed critical thinking skills;
v. have well developed research and analytical skills;
vi. subscribe to the basic values and principles governing the public administration, as referred to in section 195 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996; and
vii. subscribe to the values stated in section 1 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996.

  • The successful candidate will receive a monthly stipend of R3284.00.
  • This internship programme will be structured along the working requirements and key performance indicators of a legal adviser at the legislature.
  • This means that the successful candidate will gain experience in the actual work of a legal adviser on a day-by-day basis.
  • On completion of the internship, the successful candidate, having performed satisfactorily, will receive a certificate of internship reflecting the candidate’s capabilities in the key performance areas of a legal adviser.
  • The successful candidate will have no legitimate expectation of employment at the legislature on completion of the internship programme.
