Why This Internship Matters for Johannesburg Youth

The City of Johannesburg is calling on qualified youth from its communities to apply for a new internship opportunity within the Department of Human Settlements. This structured work based training programme is designed for students and graduates who are ready to gain real world experience in a professional municipal environment.

Internship Location and Duration

This internship position, officially listed as Internship Circular 008/2026, is based at 222 Smit Street in Braamfontein. The opportunity is part of the City’s commitment to providing on the job exposure for tertiary students or recent graduates who need experiential training to complete their academic qualifications.

If you are a resident of Johannesburg and have never participated in an internship programme before, this could be your chance to build a career in the public sector. The internship runs for a period not exceeding 18 months.

What You Will Earn

There are two remuneration structures. Graduates who have completed a qualification with a minimum of 360 credits will receive a basic salary of R10 109.86 per month. Students who are still enrolled at a tertiary institution will receive R3 500 per month.

Minimum Requirements You Need to Meet

To be considered for this role, you need a Matric or Grade 12 certificate. You must also hold a degree at NQF level 6 or 7 in one of the following fields: Business Management, Business Administration, Journalism, Media, Public Administration, or Public Management. The City of Johannesburg does not require any previous work experience. However, you must be a resident of the City of Johannesburg to qualify.

Your Primary Function as an Intern

The primary function of this internship is to support the Business Management Directorate within the Human Settlements Department. You will perform developmental level professional administrative work, research, and analysis. Your daily activities will include general office administration, monitoring and evaluation, risk management, and regulatory compliance. You will also help with human resources tasks and contribute to strategic planning. This includes assisting in the development of the Business Plan, Quarterly Reports, and strategic planning concept notes.

Key Skills and Knowledge Areas You Will Gain

This internship is a fantastic opportunity for a young person who wants to apply academic knowledge in a real municipal government setting. You will learn how a world class African city manages its human settlements programmes. The key learning areas are designed to build your professional skills.

You will support the planning and implementation of housing programmes in the region. You will handle administrative duties like data entry, filing, and mailings. The role also includes event planning, setup, and execution, which covers logistics, marketing, and operations. You will assist with marketing and promotional efforts, including creating social media flyers and other materials. Providing excellent customer service, responding to queries, and resolving issues are also central to this role.

Leading Competencies You Should Have

The City of Johannesburg is looking for candidates with strong leading competencies. You must be able to work independently after receiving initial guidance. You should handle confidential information with sensitivity. Planning, organisational, and prioritising skills are essential. You need to be detail oriented and a team player. Analytical and research skills, along with flexibility and adaptability, are important. You must be computer literate with proficiency in the MS Office Suite and the ability to analyse data using MS Excel. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal abilities, self confidence, creativity, and numeracy skills are also required.

Core Competencies Valued by the City

Core competencies for this internship include knowledge about the public service sector. You should understand council’s standard processes and procedures for providing administrative support. General knowledge of municipal governments and city regulations or codes is beneficial. The City values collaboration, teamwork, integrity, attention to detail, and a quality focus. Customer and service delivery management based on Batho Pele principles, ethics, and professionalism are non negotiable.
