City of Johannesburg Student Internships 2025

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is offering a range of student internship opportunities for qualifying students within Johannesburg communities. These internships are structured to provide practical experience and professional development under the Department of Social Development. Each opportunity is offered for a period of up to 18 months.

Closing Date: 02 September 2025
Location: Traduna Building, Johannesburg
Stipend: R10 109,86 per month (basic salary, no benefits)


Available Internship Opportunities

The CoJ is offering two primary streams for student interns:

1. Internship: Food Value Chain

Branch: Food Resilience Unit

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4
  • Degree or Diploma in Agriculture Studies / Development Studies (minimum 360 credits)
  • Must be a City of Johannesburg resident

Primary Function:
Support the development and implementation of agricultural value chain programmes, including food processing, quality and safety compliance (SABS and HACCP), farmer support, and market linkage initiatives.

Key Learning Areas:

  • Assist smallholder agricultural production
  • Identify and develop food value chain opportunities
  • Plan agricultural market days and link farmers to markets
  • Support project implementation, monitoring, and evaluation

2. Internship: Youth Coordination

Branch: Targeted Beneficiaries Unit

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4
  • BA Degree in Development Studies / Social Sciences (NQF Level 7)
  • Must be a City of Johannesburg resident

Primary Function:
Support youth development programmes aimed at empowering young people in Johannesburg. This includes administrative support, stakeholder coordination, and ensuring efficient service delivery.

Key Learning Areas:

  • Coordinate youth development initiatives
  • Administer youth empowerment programmes
  • Liaise with stakeholders to integrate youth services
  • Provide reports, records, and administrative support

Competencies Required

Both internship streams require:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of community development principles
  • Project management and coordination abilities
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel)
  • Ability to work effectively with stakeholders and local communities
