About South African Farmers Development Association (SAFDA)

The South African Farmers Development Association (SAFDA), which was established on 25 November 2015, is a registered not-for-profit development association of farmers.

The role of GIS Specialist

This role provides GIS (Geographical Information System) services that are being implemented to the following SAFDA portfolio’s, namely, Development Finance, Agri-Consulting and Project Management, and Grower Development and Diversification and any other portfolio.

Requirements for the job

  • Four-year Degree or equivalent in in environmental science, GIS, geography, or a related degree, along with two or three years of GIS database experience.
  • Expertise in the provision of GIS services – customisation of maps.
  • Data gathering, analysis and management. Computer proficiency- MS word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient in use and application of GIS software, ArcGIS and QGIS
  • Good organisational, interpersonal, problem solving, analytical skills, numeracy skills.
  • Evidence of time management and allocation of resources.
  • High levels of attention to detail and meticulous.
  • Work with limited supervision.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
  • Exposure to drone technology would be valuable.

Key Performance Areas

  • Support and lead with SAFDA GIS and Database related project(s)
  • Create, source and customize spatial data and location source data for SAFDA projects
  • Analyse data in GIS and other spreadsheet formats relevant to SAFDA projects
  • Build relations with government departments, SOE’s and stakeholders from which SAFDA can leverage data for application into SAFDA projects (e.g., Government Department, ARC, NAMC, CSIR, private sources etc.)
  • Support to Grower Development Department in the establishment of a SAFDA digital platform
    • Custodian of updated grower database housed by IQL
    • Co-ordinate the provision of spatial information for the SAFDA digital platform
  • Customization of grower data to support business plans for accessing finance, for sugar cane development, diversification and other relates projects
  • Support the DARD M & E project-verification of GIS information and forwarding to Green Cloud for uploading onto information management system
  • Develop and advise SAFDA on use of drone technology
