dtic Internship Programme 2026/28: Apply Now and Launch Your Government Career

Are you a South African graduate searching for a real opportunity to break into the public sector? The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) has officially opened applications for its Internship Programme 2026/28, and this could be the career-defining moment you have been waiting for. If you hold a tertiary qualification and you are currently unemployed, keep reading because this post covers everything you need to know.

What Is the dtic Internship Programme?

The dtic Internship Programme 2026/28 is a 24-month paid internship designed to give unemployed South African graduates hands-on experience in government operations. The programme runs from 01 July 2026 to 30 June 2028 and is based at the dtic Campus in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition is committed to building a pipeline of skilled, work-ready professionals who understand government systems and contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s broader economic development goals. Through this internship, participants gain practical skills, build professional networks, and position themselves for long-term participation in the labour market.

Monthly Stipend

Accepted interns will receive a monthly stipend of R7 860.50, calculated in line with their highest qualification at the time of appointment. While this is not a full salary, it provides meaningful financial support while you gain valuable on-the-job experience.

Successful applicants must be deadline-driven, analytical, and detail-oriented. A genuine understanding of government systems and processes, combined with ambition and a willingness to learn, will work strongly in your favour.

In line with the dtic’s Employment Equity requirements, preference will be given to African males and persons with disabilities.

How to Apply for the dtic Internship Programme 2026/28

Applications for the dtic Internship Programme 2026/28 must include two documents: a completed and signed new Z83 Form (available from any Public Service Department or at www.gov.za/documents) and a detailed Curriculum Vitae that includes details of the final-year modules and subjects you completed and passed.

You can submit your application in one of three ways:

  • By email to [email protected]. Your field of study must appear in the subject line in the following format: Intern2026 followed by your field of study (for example, Intern2026 – Public Management).
