ERASMUS MUNDUS SCHOLARSHIP FOR A JOINT MASTER’S DEGREE IN AQUACULTURE, ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Aquaculture, Environment and Society Plus (EMJMD ACES+) offers a unique opportunity to study in up to four centres of European excellence in aquaculture research and learning; Scotland, Crete, France and the Netherlands. It will also allow you to gain the practical and theoretical skills needed for a successful career in aquaculture through industry-led research programs, internships and fieldwork.

The course will provide students a broad understanding of the key principles of aquaculture and an in-depth knowledge of the many major scientific, technological and social challenges facing the sustainable development of the global aquaculture industry, including fin-fish, crustaceans, bivalves and seaweed. Key challenges influencing the sustainability of the industry include; environmental issues, nutrition, feed formulation, disease, welfare, reproduction and genetics, product safety, ecotoxicology, aquaculture systems (e.g. recirculation and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture), biosecurity, spatial planning and regulation.

Students will also be provided with key ‘life’ skills training, such as presentation, networking, social media, entrepreneurship (in association with the Scottish Institute for Enterprise), which will be tried and tested throughout the program. This unique program will, therefore, equip students with the essential skills required to establish, manage and/ or assess aquaculture activities either from a research, public authority or commercial perspective and to communicate confidently with industry representatives or the public sector.

Erasmus Mundus scholarships which are funded by the EACEA of the European Union, will meet the cost of annual tuition fees, and will provide a contribution towards travel and relocation, and also a contribution towards daily living expenses.

Scholarship benefits

  • The objectives and format of the EMJMD ACES+ allow for graduates to be equipped to work in senior management roles in a wide range of settings, including fin and shell-fish farms, environmental and regulatory organizations, international trade organizations, and also non-governmental organizations.

  • The close links they have with the aquaculture industry globally facilitates excellent employment prospects the students, whether in the commercial or public sector and/or academia.
  • The EMJMD ACES program is also geared towards developing professional practice and policy. Close links with the aquaculture industry and legislators are central to this program.

Eligibility criteria

  • Bachelor degree (or equivalent; second class or higher at Honors level) in one of the fields of biological or environmental sciences. An appropriate background could include; aquaculture-related studies, marine science and/or resources, aquatic biology, biology, or environmental sciences linked to the field of marine science and fisheries; and
  • For non-UK students, a Secure English Language Test (i.e. IELTS) certificate (applicants must achieve an overall score of 6.5 in this test and a minimum of 6.0 in all four components). Please note, if IELTS test centers’ in your country remain closed due to COVID-19, then we recommend you take the LanguageCert International Communicator ESOL B2. This test can be done online and you should not be required to do another IELTS test in the event travel bans are lifted or IELTS test centers’ re-open.
  • Mature students and/or those with practical working experience in the aquaculture industry are welcomed.

How to apply?

  • Application forms must be completed in English and can be downloaded from the Apply Now link.
  • Supporting documents include your CV, professional reference letter, copy of your degree certificates and transcripts (with certified translations in English where applicable), main passport page and evidence of English language proficiency (i.e. IELTS certificate).
  • The following documents should be emailed as a single PDF file:
    • Completed EMJMD ACES+ application form (in Microsoft Word) in English, which must include a 350-word motivation (or personal) statement and 350-word statement giving information or examples of your previous experience in the field of aquaculture;
    • Completed UHI International application form (applicable to ALL students, including European). This is a standard UHI form which must be completed in English. Please note, for the section on ‘Course Details’ please insert UHI-SAMS and please leave blank the ‘Personal Statement’ as this information collected in your EMJMD ACES+ application form, as above;
    • Curriculum vitae (CV) in freestyle format;
    • A professional reference (of 500-800 words) – please see section on Professional References for further guidance on how this should be prepared;
    • Copy of your passport;
    • Copy of your degree certificate (plus certified translation into English if applicable);
    • Copy of your transcript of marks (plus certified translation into English if applicable); and
    • Copy of your Secure English Language Test (i.e. IELTS) certificate, which is valid until the end of Sept 2020. You must achieve an overall score of 6.5 in your IELTS test and have obtained this qualification by the time you apply for the EMJMD ACES+ course).
