The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is calling on students and unemployed graduates to apply for Examination Assistant (EA) and Quality Assurer (QA) positions for the upcoming examination cycle. Who Can Apply?

To be considered for these positions, applicants must:

  • Hold a recognised academic qualification such as a Senior Certificate, National Senior Certificate, or National Senior Certificate Vocational.
  • Be either:
    • A registered student at a tertiary institution,
    • An unemployed individual with at least one tertiary qualification, or
    • An unemployed graduate.
  • Have strong numerical skills, with Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy passed at Grade 12 level.
  • Be in their second year or higher at a tertiary institution (advantageous).
  • Provide details of any prior experience in examination administration (e.g., working as an Examination Assistant or Quality Assurer).

The roles require candidates who can work under tight deadlines, manage tasks efficiently, and remain calm under pressure.


Examination Assistant Duties

Examination Assistants will work from District and Head Offices. Their duties include:

  • Receiving, checking, controlling, and scanning exam scripts daily.
  • Packing scripts for marking and ensuring each batch has the correct number of scripts and marksheets.
  • Reporting and resolving any discrepancies per subject, paper, or session.
  • Preparing marking centre files and dispatching scripts to venues.
  • Archiving and indexing scripts for future retrieval after marking is complete.

This role is crucial to keeping the exam administration process secure, accurate, and efficient.


Quality Assurer Duties

Quality Assurers will be based at Marking Centres, where their main task is to ensure marking accuracy. Responsibilities include:

  • Receiving, controlling, and distributing scripts to marking teams.
  • Confirming that the correct number of scripts and marksheets are handled during marking.
  • Verifying that all questions are marked, totals are correct, and marks are accurately recorded.
  • Working with marking teams to resolve discrepancies and ensure corrections are applied.
  • Reconciling and arranging scripts per subject for archival purposes.

This position requires exceptional attention to detail to protect the accuracy and fairness of learners’ final results.
