General Worker vacant post at the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO)

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) spearheads South Africa’s activities in the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope, commonly known as the SKA, in engineering, science and construction. SARAO is a National Facility managed by the National Research Foundation and incorporates radio astronomy instruments and programmes such as the MeerKAT telescope in the Karoo, the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng, the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (AVN) programme in nine African countries as well as the associated human capital development and commercialisation endeavours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspecting and Maintaining existing fences, gates, windmills, dams and farm roads
  • Operating of heavy and light equipment including the Honey Sucker
  • Assisting with the opening and closing of trenches
  • Removal trims trees
  • Performing maintenance/cleaning vehicles and equipment
  • Assisting in maintaining power lines
  • Collecting and removal of waste bins
  • Assisting with fencing of grave yards and maintaining thereof
  • Assists in maintaining existing gardens and orchards on farms
  • All other general duties as assigned

Key Requirements

Qualification:

  • Grade 10
  • Driver license (advantageous)

Experience:

  • 2 years work experience as a general worker in construction or on a farm

Knowledge:

  • Safety procedures
  • Operation of common hand tools (electrical and mechanical)
  • Working on heights and lifting of heavy objects
