Are you a young, creative South African graduate with a passion for storytelling, social media, and the performing arts? The Joburg City Theatres Marketing Internship 2026 is your chance to step into one of Johannesburg’s most exciting cultural environments and build a career you can be proud of.
Applications are open right now, and the closing date is 12 May 2026. Do not miss this window.
What Is This Opportunity About?
Joburg City Theatres (JCT) is a leading arts and culture institution based in Johannesburg. Through its internship programme, JCT gives recent graduates the chance to gain hands-on work experience in a real theatre environment. This is not a sit-in-the-corner, make-the-coffee kind of internship. You will be working closely with creative and marketing teams on live productions, social media campaigns, and audience engagement.
The internship is based in the Client Services department, and the position is hosted at Joburg Theatre. It runs for 12 months, and successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend of R6,094.25.
Who Can Apply?
JCT has opened this opportunity to both internal employees and external applicants from across South Africa. To be eligible, you must:
- Be between 18 and 35 years of age
- Be a South African citizen
- Hold a Grade 12 certificate
- Have a qualification in Digital Marketing, Communications, or Social Media Marketing from a recognised South African institution of higher learning
- Students requiring experiential training as part of their studies are also welcome to apply
If your qualifications were obtained abroad, you will need to include a SAQA evaluation certificate with your application.
What Will You Be Doing?
This role puts you right in the middle of the action. As a marketing intern at Joburg City Theatres, your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Developing social media content plans and creating compelling content across platforms
- Capturing behind-the-scenes moments, rehearsals, and live performances through photography and videography
- Contributing creative ideas for promoting shows and building audience excitement
- Monitoring and responding to comments, messages, and mentions in a professional manner
- Researching trends, audience preferences, and creative techniques to keep content fresh
- Supporting brainstorming sessions and creative team meetings
- Observing key production phases to understand how creative decisions come to life on stage
Skills That Will Help You Stand Out
JCT is looking for interns who bring a creative spark along with some practical skills. If you have any of the following, you are already ahead of the curve:
- Basic graphic design skills using tools like Canva or Adobe Express
- Photography and videography ability
- A natural talent for storytelling and crafting narratives around people and productions
You do not need to be a seasoned professional. What matters is that you are eager to learn, ready to contribute, and genuinely excited about the arts.
Why This Internship Is Worth Your Time
Working in a theatre environment is unlike any other work experience. You will be surrounded by creative professionals, live productions, and the kind of energy that most workplaces simply cannot offer. Beyond the creative atmosphere, you will be building a real portfolio, growing your professional network, and developing skills that are in high demand across the marketing and communications industry.
The 12-month duration gives you enough time to go deep, not just skim the surface. By the time you leave, you will have concrete experience to put on your CV and stories worth telling in any job interview.
