If you are a hardworking Grade 6 learner with big dreams for your future, here is an opportunity you do not want to miss. The Kay Mason Foundation (KMF) is calling on young leaders from Cape Town and surrounding areas to apply for a life changing scholarship.

This is not just about financial support. It is about unlocking your full potential through a structured programme that prepares you for top high school education and beyond.

Who can apply for the KMF Scholarship

To be eligible, you must meet all the following criteria without exception:

  • You are currently in Grade 6 this year (2026).
  • You are a South African citizen.
  • You are between 10 and 13 years old.
  • You are a hardworking learner who shows leadership potential and real commitment to your academics.
  • Your home is in Cape Town, the Northern Suburbs, or the Southern Suburbs, and you can travel to their offices in Bellville.
  • Your total household income is no more than R17 500 per month.

If you fit this profile, do not wait. Take action now.

What you need to prepare before applying

The application form requires you to upload scanned documents. Missing documents mean your application will be disqualified immediately. So gather everything below before you start.

Essential documents for your application

  • Your Grade 5 Term 4 school report.
  • Your Grade 6 Term 1 school report.
  • Your birth certificate.
  • Identity documents of your parent or legal guardian.
  • Death certificate if a parent is deceased.
  • Proof of household income. The exact type depends on your situation:
    • Employed parents or guardians: three recent salary slips, three years of IRP5s, and an employment contract.
    • Business owners: three years of business tax returns plus IRP5s if you draw a salary.
    • Unemployed individuals: an affidavit explaining the reason and duration of unemployment. If you receive SASSA grants, include a confirmation letter from SASSA.
    • Pensioners: three months of pension statements or salary slips or three years of IRP5s.
    • Maintenance recipients: a court order proving maintenance income.
    • If you have none of the above, provide three months of bank statements for each parent or guardian.
  • A handwritten essay about your family, your living conditions, and your community. Write this neatly in your own handwriting.

If your parents are divorced, include a certified copy of the divorce decree. If a step parent is your legal guardian, include their details too.

Important dates and deadlines

The closing date for applications is 17 May 2026. That is your deadline. Late applications will not be accepted. Mark this date on your calendar and apply well before then to avoid any last minute issues.

What happens after you apply

The foundation follows a clear three stage process.

First, your application will be screened. If you meet all the criteria and your documents are complete, you will be invited for testing. Make sure your contact details are correct because initial communication happens by email.

Second, successful learners from testing will join the Selection and Support Programme. This involves attending various assessments at the KMF offices in Bellville. Note that being in this programme does not guarantee a scholarship. You still need to prove yourself.

Third, scholarships will be awarded early in 2027. Winners then join the Senior Scholar Preparation Programme. This is where your journey truly takes off.

One very important warning: if you miss any assessment or important meeting after receiving communication on the contact details you provided, your application will be disqualified. No second chances. So be reliable and stay on top of your emails.

Your privacy is protected

KMF respects your personal information. They store your data securely and use it only for scholarship purposes. They follow the South African Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act. Your information will not be shared with unauthorised people or organisations.

How to submit your application

Go to the official KMF scholarship applications page at kmf.org.za/applications and fill out the form carefully. Upload all your documents before clicking submit. The form accepts PDF, JPG, and PNG files.

Be patient after you click submit. Processing can take a short while because of the attachments. Do not refresh your browser or close the window until you see the confirmation screen. That is how you know your application has gone through successfully.

Final reminders before you apply

Double check everything. Incorrect or untruthful information leads to immediate disqualification. Missing documents disqualify you. Not meeting any single criteria disqualifies you. The foundation also does a full financial review before you can be considered for the Selection and Support Programme.

The Kay Mason Foundation’s decision is final. So give your best effort now.
