The Opportunity: Media & Communications Intern
Are you passionate about media, communications, and humanitarian work? As a Media & Communications Intern at MSF Southern Africa, you’ll support the Media Liaison Specialists in amplifying MSF’s mission through compelling storytelling, media engagement, and strategic content creation. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, global organization while contributing to life-changing humanitarian efforts.
Duties
- Monitor and share MSF’s impact: Track media coverage (print, online, broadcast) using tools like Newsclip and Google Alerts, and compile engaging reports (MSF in the Media, Daily Digest, Operational Updates) for internal teams.
- Build media connections: Research and update journalist contacts on Prezly, map media beats, and support media-related events to strengthen MSF’s network.
- Craft compelling stories: Develop and pitch stories to media outlets, curate content for medical journals, and create editorials and visuals that inspire action.
- Support medical outreach: Manage content schedules, coordinate with designers, and liaise with medical journal account managers to promote MSF’s work to healthcare professionals.
- Stay organized: Maintain archives, track payments, and ensure compliance with knowledge management and GDPR guidelines.
- Innovate and collaborate: Contribute to brainstorming sessions, source content from MSF platforms, and work closely with the Communications team to drive engagement.
Qualifications & Skills
- A recently attained degree or National Diploma in Communications, Media, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
- Knowledge of the South African media landscape, including community media.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; familiarity with online media databases is a plus.
- Strong research, analytical, and time-management skills.
- Interest in local/international current affairs and humanitarian issues.
- No prior experience required – just a curious mind and eagerness to learn!
