Overview

Please note: This is not an active role. Teams across CHAI recruit volunteers on a rolling basis, as needed. Funding is available for volunteer roles and a role typically lasts between 3-6 months. These roles will be based in one of CHAI’s program countries in Africa, Asia or Central America. These roles are not available in the United States.


CHAI Overview:


Founded in 2002, by President William J. Clinton and Ira C. Magaziner, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (“CHAI”) is a global health organization committed to saving lives, reducing the burden of disease and strengthening integrated health systems in the developing world.


The hallmark of CHAI’s approach is simultaneous and intensive engagement on both the demand and supply sides of the market. On the demand side, CHAI’s country teams help governments scale up treatment programs, improve procurement and supply chain management.


CHAI also works to address supply-side barriers to access and foster the development of healthy marketplaces to ensure the sustainable supply of essential medicines. CHAI works closely with drug and diagnostic manufacturers to lower prices, encourages the adoption of stringent quality standards, and facilitates the entry and uptake of new improved products.

Volunteer Position Overview:


The Associate will lead the collection and analysis of data from a variety of sources such as shipment data via procurers and manufacturers, demographic data from household surveys, and usage data reported by countries. The Associate will be responsible for developing rigorous market analyses such as global market forecasts / outlooks and other reports to support investment decisions by suppliers and supply planning by multilateral agencies and country programs.


The Associate will support global and country team efforts to build, maintain, and update its supply and demand side market strategy for specific commodities and services. For example, this can include developing strategies to secure appropriate production capacity of low-cost, quality-assured contraceptives that meets forecasted demand or supporting the scale-up of new or underutilized contraceptive methods by addressing market barriers. In doing so, the Associate will develop strong relationships with various teams within CHAI, as well as with pharmaceutical suppliers and key opinion leaders.


We are seeking a highly-motivated, entrepreneurial individual with outstanding analytical skills, problem-solving ability and communication skills. The Volunteer must be able to function independently, be flexible, and have a strong commitment to excellence. Responsibilities

• Manage the development of databases, analyses, and frameworks to assist in prioritizing commodities in need of supply-side interventions
• Work with internal and external partners to analyze the market outlook, supplier landscape, and production economics across a range of products
• Support management of relationships with senior-level stakeholders at procurement agencies, manufacturers, and other NGOs
• Devise analyses and strategies to support potential negotiations with pharmaceutical companies
• Design models to assess new opportunities to improve or expand pharmaceutical access programs in the developing world
• Develop clear communications materials based upon analyses
• Present findings of analyses to a broad range of internal and external audiences in meetings and conferences

Qualifications

• Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years analytical experience working in the private sector; Masters strongly preferred
• Strong analytical, problem solving, and quantitative modeling skills, plus affinity for analytics and information management
• High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word (other statistical software package knowledge a plus)
• Experience managing large datasets preferred
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare compelling presentations
• Ability to think strategically, handle ambiguity and work in a fast-paced, limited-structure, multicultural environment
• Ability to learn on the job quickly and absorb/synthesize a broad range of information
• Detail-oriented with strong organization skills
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and work independently
• Available for at least 25% travel
• Ability to be effective in high-pressure situations

Volunteer Position Overview:

CHAI uses operations research, mathematical modeling, impact evaluations, and other analytical tools to provide the evidence needed to dramatically increase the efficiency and impact of global health interventions. Working closely with CHAI’s country teams and partner governments, we address challenges faced in many resource-limited settings such as the scarcity of human resources, and the availability and distribution of drugs and commodities.

Volunteers will works closely with CHAI Teams to support a variety of projects, including, but not limited to, conducting literature reviews, checking data and assisting with preliminary analysis, preparing presentations to share research results, writing project reports, and supporting other requests as needed. This volunteer role requires strong analytical skills, and would be best suited for a graduate student or recent graduates (undergraduate or graduate school) who are interested in applying their quantitative training in biostatistics, epidemiology, economics, or a related degree.

Responsibilities

• Assist in updating M&E framework
• Ensure alignment of program M&E framework with existing data systems and results frameworks
• Develop tools such as survey instruments, protocols, and databases for program monitoring and evaluation purposes
• Establish baseline and end line measures across target counties and at the national level
• Develop tools for the presentation and dissemination of information to inform program design and modifications by decision-makers and for optimization of program strategies
• Evaluate current use of data systems at the facility, county, and central level and provide recommendations for integration of program M&E with existing systems and using existing population-based surveys and assessments
• Build capacity of county and health facility staff in timely and accurate health data collection, management and dissemination
• Contribute to donor reports
• Conduct other formative and operational research as necessary
• Represent CHAI at relevant technical working groups and meetings

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of professional experience or Master’s degree with 1 year of relevant experience
• Master’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, information management, economics or relevant subject matter strongly preferred
• Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing M&E systems for health programs from end to end (frameworks, information systems, data collection tools, data collection and analysis, reporting, etc.
• Experience with public health research, implementation science, and the relevant evaluation models and methods, particularly in establishing baseline figures and assessing post-intervention changes and targets
• Experience with health information management systems and relevant platforms
• Excellent analytical skills, qualitatively and quantitatively; high proficiency in MS Office Suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access, and other relevant software packages
• Exceptional attention to detail, with strong organizational and problem solving skills
• Ability to work under pressure in a fast-pace environment, and collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary and multicultural team of colleagues and stakeholders
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, including the ability to effectively synthesize large amounts of information and potentially complex analyses for consumption by a wide audience
• Must have good understanding of M&E challenges and limitations in post-conflict and low-resource settings, particularly for hard-to-measure and sensitively public health issues
• Prior experience in Africa, Asia or Central America strongly preferred
