AfCFTA Digital Innovation Challenge – Application Deadline: 4th September 2026

AfCFTA Digital Innovation Challenge 2026 (2nd Edition): Apply Now for Africa’s Top Digital Trade Competition

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat has launched the second edition of the AfCFTA Digital Innovation Challenge, calling on African innovators, entrepreneurs, and startups to showcase digital solutions that break down barriers to cross-border trade. Held under the theme “Shaping Africa’s Future Through African Solutions,” the Challenge places particular emphasis on solutions developed by women and young entrepreneurs, and offers a genuine pathway to mentorship, visibility, and business development support at continental level.

Here is a full breakdown of the Challenge, who can apply, what winners receive, and how to submit your application before the deadline.

About the AfCFTA Digital Innovation Challenge

As Africa advances implementation of the AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade and the Protocol on Women and Youth in Trade, this second edition builds on the success of the inaugural Challenge, which demonstrated the programme’s role in cultivating a new generation of African innovators whose solutions strengthen intra-African trade and support the realization of a seamless, inclusive, and integrated African Digital Market.

This year’s edition focuses specifically on “Realising the AfCFTA for MSMEs through Digital Solutions,” seeking bold, scalable digital tools that help micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises connect to markets, facilitate cross-border trade, and accelerate inclusive economic growth under the AfCFTA framework.

Who Can Apply?

The Challenge is open to:

  • Individuals, teams, startups, and enterprises from any African Union Member State
  • African innovators and entrepreneurs between 18 and 35 years old
  • Applicants who can clearly demonstrate how their digital solution addresses existing barriers to cross-border trade and contributes to the implementation of the AfCFTA
  • Applicants whose innovation is already at the operational-to-scaling stage, rather than early-stage ideation

Assessment Criteria for Operational-to-Scaling Solutions

Applications are evaluated against five core criteria:

  • Proven Impact: Evidence that the solution effectively facilitates cross-border trade and delivers tangible benefits to MSMEs within the AfCFTA framework
  • Relevance to AfCFTA Objectives: Clear alignment with AfCFTA’s goals, particularly through digital technologies that facilitate cross-border trade of goods and services for MSMEs
  • Operational Excellence: Demonstrated technological robustness, a positive user experience, and reliable backend support
  • Scalability and Expansion Potential: A clear strategy and capability for expanding into new markets, including adapting to different regulatory environments and trade ecosystems
  • Digital Innovation: Integration, or strong potential for integration, of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and blockchain to improve trade facilitation

The Challenge is structured in tiers, with increasing levels of support and recognition as innovators advance.
