The Skills Development Corporation (SDC) offers a platform for businesses to fund B-BBEE-certified learnerships and skills programmes, targeting both employed workforces and unemployed youth to enhance B-BBEE Skills Development portfolios. This streamlined process supports eligible learners in accessing career-building opportunities in South Africa.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for SDC learnerships, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  • South African Citizen: Must be a resident of South Africa.
  • Educational Background: Possess a school-leaving certificate or tertiary qualifications (if applicable).
  • Disability Status (if applicable): Per the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998, individuals with long-term or recurring physical or mental impairments that limit employment prospects qualify as persons with disabilities. Physical impairments include partial/total loss of bodily function or sensory impairments; mental impairments involve clinically recognized conditions affecting thought, judgment, or emotions.
  • Unemployed or Underemployed: Priority given to unemployed youth or those seeking skills development.
  • No Criminal Record: Applicants must have a clean criminal record, subject to validation.

Application Process

The SDC learner application process is designed to identify and place eligible candidates into learnerships aligned with client B-BBEE needs. Follow these steps:

Applicants must submit the following original documents in person at an SDC campus:

  • Johannesburg: 24 Achter Road, Paulshof, Sandton, 2191
    • Submission Hours:
      • Abled learners: Mondays, 8:00 AM–12:00 PM
      • Disabled learners: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–12:00 PM
  • Cape Town: Fourth Floor, Bloemhof Building, 112 Edward Street, Bellville, 7530
    • Submission Hours:
      • Abled learners: Mondays, 8:00 AM–12:00 PM
      • Disabled learners: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–12:00 PM

Required Documents:

  • Proof of disability (if applicable, per Employment Equity Act)
  • Updated CV (including tertiary qualifications and/or work experience)
  • Proof of residence
  • 2 x Certified copies of highest school qualification
  • 2 x Certified copies of South African ID
  • 3-month bank statement (not older than 3 months)
  • SARS Tax Number (Notice of Registration)

Step 3: Document Validation

All submitted documents undergo thorough validation to ensure compliance with ethical and legal standards.

Step 4: Interview

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for a brief interview to assess:

  • Background and experience
  • Abilities and skills
  • Communication proficiency

Step 5: Assessment Test

Applicants must complete an assessment test and achieve a minimum score of 80% to proceed.

Step 6: Validation and Database Inclusion

Upon successful completion of steps 1–5, SDC validates all documentation, interview notes, and test results. Approved applicants are added to the validated applicant database. A waiting period may apply, as placement depends on client B-BBEE Skills Development needs.

Step 7: Learnership Placement

Once allocated to a learnership, successful applicants are invited to an SDC campus to sign their contract and begin the programme.
