5 South African Banks Offering Student Loans for South African Students, and These Are the Requirements

You have been accepted into a course, NSFAS has not come through or was never an option, and the registration deadline is getting closer by the week. This is the exact position a student loan is built for. Several South African banks offering student loans can cover tuition, accommodation, books, and equipment, but each one sets its own rules on who qualifies, how much you can borrow, and who has to sign as guarantor. This guide walks through five of them so you know exactly what to prepare before you apply.

Before comparing individual banks, it helps to understand what all South African banks offering student loans have in common. A student loan in South Africa is almost never handed to a student directly. Instead, a parent, guardian, or sponsor known as the principal debtor or guarantor applies on the student’s behalf and carries legal responsibility for repayment. That person needs a stable income, usually a minimum of around R3,000 a month, and a reasonably clean credit record. During your studies, you or your guarantor typically pay only the interest, and full repayment of the capital begins several months after you graduate or stop studying. With that shared structure in mind, here is how the five main options compare.

Standard Bank

Among South African banks offering student loans, Standard Bank’s product is open to South African citizens studying full-time or part-time, and it will also fund a Private Pilot’s Licence at an institution accredited by the South African Civil Aviation Authority, which is unusual among the major banks. Matriculants applying for their first year of funding need to submit their final National Senior Certificate results before the application can be completed. Interest rates are personalised and currently range from roughly 10.50 percent up to 18.50 percent depending on the applicant’s risk profile.

What you will need: A South African ID, final matric results for first-time applicants or academic transcripts for returning students, proof of income for the guarantor, and proof of registration or acceptance at the institution.

Good to know: Your guarantor does not need to already bank with Standard Bank for local study, but if you are studying overseas the guarantor must hold a Standard Bank South Africa account.

First National Bank (FNB)

FNB’s Student Loan, marketed under its Life Start range for younger applicants, funds tuition, accommodation, equipment, and textbooks, with loan sizes reported anywhere from roughly R4,000 up to R360,000 depending on affordability and credit assessment. The loan is processed as a personal loan in the principal debtor’s name, and funds are paid into that person’s account rather than directly to the institution, so budgeting the payment toward fees is the guarantor’s responsibility.

What you will need: The principal debtor’s South African ID, latest three months’ payslips or three months’ bank statements, proof of residence no older than three months, and proof of enrolment or registration from the institution.

Good to know: Reported interest rates for FNB student loans have ranged from around 6.75 percent to 16.25 percent depending on the credit profile, and credit life insurance is compulsory, either through FNB’s own Customer Protection Plan or an equivalent policy of your choice.

Nedbank

Nedbank funds courses at NQF level 5 or higher, meaning anything above a higher certificate, offered by an institution registered with the South African Qualifications Authority. Preferential interest rates are tied to the student’s academic performance, so stronger results genuinely translate into a cheaper loan over time. There is no age restriction on the student, which makes this option accessible to mature students and career changers, not just school leavers.

What you will need: A matric certificate for first-year applicants or previous exam results for continuing students, proof of registration at an accredited institution, valid South African ID documents for both student and guarantor, the guarantor’s latest payslip or three months of stamped bank statements, and a statement covering tuition, textbooks, equipment, and accommodation costs.

Good to know: You must reapply every academic year with your latest results attached, you cannot already be in arrears on another student loan or study grant, and Nedbank will open a transactional account for you once the loan is approved if you don’t already have one.

Absa

Absa covers one of the widest ranges of institutions among the major banks, extending beyond universities to universities of technology, TVET colleges, agricultural colleges, SETA-registered private institutions, and approved aviation and online courses. Loans start from around R15,000 a year, and the principal debtor needs to earn more than R3,000 a month to qualify.

What you will need: South African citizenship or permanent residency for the applicant, proof of income above the minimum threshold, valid ID documentation, and a statement of textbooks, tuition fees, accommodation, and equipment costs.

Good to know: Because Absa’s list of eligible institutions is broader than most competitors, it is worth checking here first if your course is at a TVET college, agricultural college, or private SETA-accredited provider rather than a traditional university.

Fundi (in partnership with major banks and Capitec)

Fundi is not a bank in its own right, but it is one of the most accessible routes into a student loan in South Africa because it processes funding for multiple providers, including Capitec, through a single online application. This matters if you want to compare offers without submitting separate paperwork to every bank on this list. Loan amounts through Fundi and Capitec’s education finance option can extend well beyond what a single walk-in application might offer, and some of these providers do not always require a traditional guarantor, which sets them apart from the four banks above.

What you will need: ID documentation, proof of registration or acceptance at an accredited institution, and income or affordability information depending on whether a guarantor is required for your specific application.

Good to know: Because approval criteria and guarantor requirements shift between Fundi’s partner banks, always confirm the exact terms for the specific lender behind your offer before signing.

How to Choose the Right Loan Before You Apply

Choosing between the various South African banks offering student loans starts with the institution you are attending, since Absa’s broader list of accredited institutions matters if you are heading to a TVET or agricultural college rather than a university. If your guarantor already banks with one of these institutions, that relationship can speed up approval and sometimes improve the rate offered. Compare interest rates carefully rather than only the loan amount, because a smaller loan at a lower rate can cost less over the life of the debt than a larger one at a higher rate. If you or your guarantor would struggle to find a suitable guarantor at all, look closely at Fundi’s partner options first, since some do not require one. Finally, apply early. Most of these South African banks offering student loans process applications on a rolling basis, but registration deadlines do not move, and processing can take several days once documents are submitted.

Final Word

Choosing between South African banks offering student loans comes down to matching the lender’s requirements, eligible institutions, and interest structure to your own situation, not simply picking the first one you find. Standard Bank, FNB, Nedbank, and Absa each fund the same core costs, tuition, accommodation, books, and equipment, but differ meaningfully on guarantor rules, eligible institutions, and how interest is calculated, while Fundi offers a faster way to compare several lenders including Capitec at once. Gather your ID documents, academic results, and your guarantor’s proof of income before you apply, and start the process as early as you can.
