Call for Applications 2027: GPN MA Scholarship at Rhodes University
The Global Partnership Network (GPN) offers an MA scholarship to students from ODA countries who are enrolled in (or have been accepted for) an MA in Political and International Studies at Rhodes University.
Application requirement:
- Citizenship from a development aid receiving country according to the OECD DAC List countries (South Africa is on the list – for the other countries on the list, see here).
- Last degree must not be longer than 6 years ago.
- Applicants may not already have an MA degree (or equivalent) from another programme.
Focus area and supervision:
- Applicants’ research areas should align with the interests of the GPN’s research clusters and more generally with the GPN’s values and orientation. You do not need to be working exactly on the topics outlined in the three clusters, but your research does need to relate to them in some way.
- The scholarship is usually for students under the (co)supervision of Professor Sally Matthews (who is affiliated with the GPN), but other supervision arrangements are possible.
- Preference will be given to students working on the following topics:
- The politics of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) – linked to GPN research cluster 1 (development cooperation).
- Ubuntu and (post)development – linked to GPN research cluster 1 (development cooperation).
- The politics of knowledge production on Africa – linked to GPN research cluster 3 (knowledge production).
Application documents:
- Completed Application Data Sheet (see below).
- Motivation letter – please describe your thematic connection to the GPN. Please indicate to which cluster area your research relates.
- Curriculum Vitae.
- Copy of admission letter or enrolment confirmation.
- Copy of BA (Hons) degree and transcripts.
Students who are still completing an Honours degree may apply and need not submit 4 and 5 above. However, the scholarship will only be confirmed on admission to an MA degree.

The MA scholarship will be awarded for the duration of the standard study programme (up to a maximum of 2 years).
The MA scholarship includes a monthly scholarship of:
- 500 Euros per month for domestic students.
- 600 Euros per month for international students.
The scholarship holder is required to pursue the MA degree in a full-time capacity. A maximum of 10 hours/week of employment is allowed while receiving the scholarship. The scholarship holder is not allowed to receive other funding for pursuing the MA study programme.
